Dr. Andrew Taylor Still an American Osteopath was the founder of Osteopathy in the late 1800’s. He coined the term “Osteopathy” to denote the important role that osseous tissues play in the structure and function of the organism.

Osteopathy involves the assessment of the patient as a whole, which encompasses the body, mind and spirit combination. Osteopathic practitioners use precise palpatory skills to assess and treat the bones, muscles, viscera (organs), nervous systems, circulatory system / fluids and the cranium.

OSTEOPATHY is using one’s hands to engage a therapeutic process governed by the Health of the patient.

James Jealous D.O.

The goal of Osteopathic treatment is to find and treat the area(s) dysfunction within the body which are affecting the normal function of the anatomy and physiology. The areas of dysfunction can be in any of these systems;

musculoskeletal
respiratory
cardiovascular
digestive
reproductive
nervous

Treatment can relieve pain, improve mobility and restore health and vitality. As Osteopathic practitioners we find and treat the cause of the dysfunction instead of “chasing symptoms”.

“To find health should be the object of the doctor. Anyone can find disease”.

A.T. Still 1892.

The Osteopathic Practitioner acts as a fulcrum for the health to express itself.  The Osteopathic Practitioner is a facilitator, and the human body does the work.

All people have the ability to stimulate healing. All healing and health comes from within the body. Many old Osteopaths refer to treatment as “awakening your inner physician”.
